Buc-ee’s Lafayette, Louisiana: From a Two-Year Delay Back to Mid-2027
By Buc-ee’s Menu Travel Team Fact-Checked & Updated: August 2026
Is Buc-ee’s open in Lafayette, Louisiana?
Buc-ee’s Lafayette is currently under construction at I-10 and Louisiana Avenue and is targeted to open in mid-2027. Following weather delays in 2025, site prep resumed, and the Lafayette Economic Development Authority (LEDA) confirmed a mid-2027 opening target for the $82 million, 74,000-square-foot travel center.

Is Buc-ee’s Open in Lafayette Yet?
Not yet, and this one had a genuinely bumpy road to get where it is now. Buc-ee’s closed on 42 acres at the northeast corner of I-10 and Louisiana Avenue in December 2024, with an $82 million project originally aimed at a second-quarter 2026 opening. Construction started in early 2025, but by that summer, heavy rain and design issues brought the job to a halt — and for a while, Buc-ee’s own published materials pushed the expected completion all the way out to 2028.
Since then, things have genuinely improved. Construction resumed in September 2025, and by January 2026, the Lafayette Economic Development Authority (LEDA) announced that Buc-ee’s had updated its guidance to a mid-2027 opening, with the first phase of construction complete and site prep continuing. That said, some national trackers are still citing the earlier 2028 estimate, since Buc-ee’s hasn’t publicly revised the date on its own website. Treat mid-2027 as the more current, locally sourced figure, and 2028 as the more conservative fallback.
Prime Location for I-10 Travelers & UL Lafayette Fans:
Situated at the northeast corner of Interstate 20 / I-10 and Louisiana Avenue, the Lafayette location is perfectly positioned for commuter traffic between Houston, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans. It is located just 5 miles from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (UL Lafayette), making it a major future hub for Ragin’ Cajuns game-day traffic and college visitors.
Pro Tip: If you find an article online quoting a 2028 opening for Lafayette, check the byline date. Most of those pieces are from mid-to-late 2025, before LEDA’s January 2026 update moved the target back up to mid-2027
What Actually Caused the Delay
Two separate problems stacked on top of each other. First, heavy rainfall through May, June, and July of 2025 repeatedly soaked the site’s fill dirt, which lost load-bearing strength and settled unevenly — requiring crews to re-grade and add more fill before they could safely pour the foundation. Second, the general contractor, Triton Construction, cited unresolved design issues running in parallel with the weather problems. By July 2025, Triton put the job on a temporary hold rather than push forward under those conditions.
Local officials were candid about the setback at the time, with Lafayette’s mayor-president publicly acknowledging the frustration while still expressing confidence the store would eventually open. Dirt work and grading resumed on site by September 9, 2025, and the project has been moving forward since.

What the Finished Store Will Include
Once complete, the Lafayette Buc-ee’s will span roughly 74,000 square feet — among the larger store models in the Gulf South — with about 120 fuel pumps, more than 700 parking spaces, and EV charging stations on the 42-acre site. LEDA projects it will create around 150 jobs starting at $17 an hour and generate an estimated $1.5 million a year in sales tax revenue. Ruston vs. Lafayette: Which Opens First?
Lafayette (This Project)
Originally eyed for 2026, now targeting mid-2027. Will be Louisiana’s second store.
Ruston still has a head start in construction time, and Buc-ee’s own leadership has framed it as Louisiana’s intended “first” location. But as of early 2026, both projects are pointing to roughly the same mid-2027 window — close enough that either one could technically open first depending on how each site’s remaining work goes.
Where’s the Nearest Open Buc-ee’s Right Now?
For Acadiana residents, the closest operating Buc-ee’s today is the Harrison County, Mississippi location near Biloxi, roughly a two-and-a-half-hour drive from the Lafayette area — an easy day trip if you’re headed toward the Mississippi Gulf Coast in the meantime.
Frequently Asked Questions
The Bottom Line
Lafayette’s Buc-ee’s had a genuinely rough 2025 — rain, design issues, and a public estimate that briefly jumped to 2028. But the project didn’t stall out for good: construction resumed, a full phase is done, and LEDA’s own updated guidance now points to mid-2027, putting it back in step with Ruston. It’s still not a locked date, but it’s a real recovery, not just an optimistic guess.
